Anthropic’s Upcoming IPO Set to Transform Early Backers Into Multi-Billionaires

As the AI giant prepares for a public listing, investors who joined as early as 2021 are poised to see their holdings surge to tens of billions of dollars.

The tension surrounding Anthropic’s imminent public offering lies not just in the valuation itself, but in the staggering wealth transfer it promises to its investors. With a listing expected later this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion, the event is positioned to be a historic windfall. Even before the IPO, however, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers already amount to billions, creating a landscape where early entry points have yielded extraordinary returns. The central question for the market is how much further these figures will climb once the company transitions to public ownership.

According to recent data cited by Bloomberg, the value of these holdings is already substantial at the company’s latest private market valuation of $965 billion. This figure serves as the baseline for calculating the current worth of investments made years ago. The disparity between entry valuations and current prices highlights the explosive growth of the AI sector, with some investors seeing their positions increase by orders of magnitude in just a few years. This surge in value is setting the stage for a massive liquidity event that will reshape the portfolios of several high-profile figures and firms.

Among the most notable beneficiaries is Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO. He participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at a comparatively modest $461 million. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. If the IPO proceeds at the anticipated $2 trillion mark, his holdings would likely see a further significant increase, cementing his status as one of the top individual beneficiaries of the AI boom.

Institutional investors have also reaped substantial rewards. Iconiq, which wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the firm was valued at $183 billion, now holds a position worth $17 billion. This late-stage bet has the potential to double in value upon the company's public listing. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time. That commitment now translates to a stake valued at $14 billion, reflecting the firm’s early confidence in the company's trajectory.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, joined the fold more recently, backing the AI lab earlier this year when its valuation stood at $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured roughly 1% ownership. This investment has already more than doubled its initial cost, a quick return that underscores the rapid appreciation of AI assets in the current market climate. The firm’s entry at such a high valuation still yielded immediate paper gains, a testament to the sector's momentum.

Other players in the ecosystem have seen even more dramatic percentage gains. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in that same 2023 round. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. Although Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, the original stake remains worth billions.

The collective rise in value for these backers suggests that the upcoming IPO will not only raise capital for Anthropic but also unlock significant liquidity for its investors. As the company moves toward a $2 trillion valuation, the gap between its 2021 entry points and today’s market reality illustrates the unprecedented speed of growth in the artificial intelligence industry. For the backers listed, the transition to public markets represents the final step in a journey that began with relatively small checks and has ended with portfolios dominated by multi-billion-dollar assets.

Looking ahead, the market will watch closely as Anthropic navigates its public debut. The reported valuations and ownership stakes provide a snapshot of the current wealth distribution among its investors, but the final numbers will depend on how the IPO is received. For now, the data confirms that those who backed the company in its early stages are positioned to reap some of the largest financial rewards in recent tech history, while later-stage entrants also enjoy substantial gains.
