New details emerge on teen plot

Federal agents arrested a McKinney resident for allegedly planning to target a Texas congressman during a veteran fundraiser.

New information regarding the alleged assassination plot against Representative Keith Self has surfaced as the investigation moves forward. The 17-year-old from McKinney was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this month. Campaign officials for the North Texas lawmaker confirmed the details to reporters this week. The arrest marks a significant escalation in the security concerns surrounding the Republican’s race for a third term in Congress.

The timeline of the incident reveals a gap between the physical arrest and the political notification. Federal agents detained the teen on October 5. However, the congressman’s staff did not learn of the custody until October 6. They received the information through the U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators indicated that the minor had been under surveillance by federal agents for some time. Officials stated the teen was believed to be radicalized and was planning a terrorist attack aligned with the Islamic State group.

The specific target for the alleged attack was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans. The event was scheduled for October 17 and featured former Dallas Cowboys players along with other prominent guests. The location provided a high-visibility opportunity for the suspect to carry out the plan. The convergence of a popular community event and a high-profile political figure created a complex security challenge for the congressional team.

Representative Self stated that he responded to the threat with a measured approach shaped by his military background. He noted that his experience in combat zones allowed him to remain calm rather than panicked. He focused on determining if the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger cell. His wife, who spent 25 years as a military spouse, also took the situation seriously. She understood the inherent risks associated with a public figure’s life. The couple agreed that while the threat was serious, it was not as traumatic for them as it might have been for other politicians.

The congressman emphasized that this incident differed from previous threats he had received. While he had always been aware of potential dangers, this was the first time a threat reached the level of a federal arrest. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation based on the information provided by investigators. The team increased their situational awareness and security protocols immediately after learning of the detention. They adjusted their movement and visibility to mitigate any remaining risks.

Despite the looming threat, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned on October 17. He participated in the event and judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He reported that the day proceeded without incident. The attendance was a deliberate choice to show that the plot would not disrupt the campaign schedule. It also served as a practical test of the heightened security measures implemented by his team.

The political context of the arrest is tied to Self’s recent legislative actions. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. His district includes McKinney, where local debate over a mosque expansion plan has drawn significant attention. The city council approved the expansion in August after contentious public comment. A subsequent effort to recall several council members added to the local political tension.

The arrest has also drawn reactions from the political arena. Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, condemned the plot on social media. The teen’s identity has not been made public as the investigation continues. The FBI Dallas office has not yet provided additional details to local media outlets. The case remains active, and authorities are continuing to examine the scope of the suspect’s plans.

Looking ahead, Self intends to continue his campaign activities without interruption. He has been seen greeting voters and meeting with constituents every day since the news broke. He stated that the incident will not deter him from alerting the public to his political views. The team will maintain its elevated security posture while moving forward. The next phase of the race will proceed with a focus on both policy and safety.
