The 2026-27 NHL season has reached the ten-game mark for every team, revealing a wave of players who have either rebounded from recent slumps or broken out into star roles. Analysts are looking beyond raw scoring numbers to assess who is driving play and holding onto those gains.
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews leads the group of veterans finding their stride. After two seasons of lower output, Matthews has recorded nine goals in fourteen games. That pace projects to 54 goals and 120 points for the year. NHL Edge data indicates his skating speed has improved, with his mid-range bursts moving from the 72nd to the 93rd percentile. He is also more aggressive on the forecheck, helping his line create more turnovers.
In Vancouver, Elias Pettersson is producing roughly one point per game under a new coaching staff. He has already matched his entire power-play goal total from last season and ranks in the top five among forwards for blocked shots. The Canucks attempted to trade him twice in the past two years due to off-ice issues and inconsistent play.
Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark started the season as one of the league’s best, ranking second only to Jake Oettinger in goals above expected according to MoneyPuck. He is currently injured but expected back within a week. The team hopes he returns to form, as the performance drop-off to backup Samuel Ersson has been stark.
New York Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere is earning top-line minutes of about 19 per game. With Artemi Panarin no longer on the roster, Lafreniere is creating chances through more assertive play and improved zone entries. His shooting percentage is expected to regress, but his underlying metrics suggest a lasting impact.
Toronto’s Dillon Cowan has moved from the third line to the top unit alongside Matthews and Jack Roslovic. He has six goals and thirteen points in fourteen games, already halfway to his rookie totals of eleven goals and twenty-nine points. His speed now ranks in the 90th percentile or higher in all three burst categories.
Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov leads the Flyers in points with eight goals in fourteen games. He arrived at camp in the best shape of his career and has equaled last season's power-play goal output. Jake McTavish is on pace for career highs of 22 goals and 52 points in St. Louis, while Edmonton’s Ivan Podkolzin is on pace for over 50 goals and 90 points while playing nearly 20 minutes a night.
