Abubakarr Barrie, 23, remains in custody without bail after a judge ordered his detention on Monday afternoon. He faces nine charges, including first-degree attempted murder, which carries a potential life sentence if he is found guilty.

The incident occurred on Thursday in a rental property on Garrison Boulevard near Barrington Road in northwest Baltimore. Police report that Barrie picked up the 15-year-old victim in an unlicensed taxi. Instead of taking her to a takeout restaurant, he became violent immediately and drove her to a basement apartment in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard.

According to charging documents, Barrie advised the girl to put down her phone and stop yelling. He then began stabbing her across her body. The victim fought back, scratching and hitting him. She eventually struck him with a fire extinguisher, creating an opening to escape.

The teen fled the apartment naked and without shoes, her body covered in blood. She ran approximately 10 minutes to the 3800 block of Belle Avenue. An unidentified resident let her use a phone to call 911 and her mother.

Police tracked Barrie using the victim's phone, which he still held. They also identified him and his white Hyundai Elantra through a Cash App number he had given her to pay for the ride. Barrie had lived on Garrison Boulevard for only one month at the time of the attack.

His public defender told the court that Barrie maintains his innocence. The attorney noted that Barrie works for Uber Eats and was preparing to obtain his GED. While he had a criminal record, he had no prior convictions. Probation services reported a history of suicide attempts, prompting his lawyer to request monitoring while he is held.

Shana Kay, who lives across the street, said she had never seen Barrie before. She told reporters that she would have helped the victim and expressed fear for her own daughter, who likes taking taxis. A neighbor next door said she noticed nothing unusual but admitted she distrusts people living nearby.

Police say the victim suffered at least five stab wounds and a lung collapse. Doctors expect her to survive her injuries. WJZ Investigates contacted the victim's family for comment.
