Atlanta police are asking residents to identify the gunman in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old James Hampton. Hampton died after gunfire erupted near two neighboring streets in northwest Atlanta, marking the latest loss in a city grappling with violence outside social gatherings. His death adds to the toll on working families who often attend these events and live in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Officers arrived at the 1200 block of Barnes Street NW around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of a shooting. Medical workers attempted to save Hampton at the scene, but he succumbed to his injuries. Department officials stated that a Crime Stoppers bulletin confirmed the gunfire began at 2 a.m., following an after-party event held at that address. The homicide unit arrived shortly after to begin examining the scene for evidence.

Detectives have not released a description of the suspect or explained what sparked the violence during the late-night gathering. Investigators have also not disclosed the number of party attendees or confirmed whether more than one firearm was involved. The homicide investigation remains active as detectives work to piece together the sequence of events that led to Hampton's death.

The Atlanta Police Department is urging anyone with information to contact Detective J. Hill directly at 470-985-8241. Residents can also submit anonymous details to Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta by calling 404-577-8477 or 404-577-TIPS. Online tips are available through the department's website or the P3 Tips mobile application. Tipsters who help solve the case may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 without revealing their names.

The investigation relies on community input to move forward. Police provided preliminary details in an emailed media advisory, while Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta issued a bulletin outlining the reward process. Detectives continue to review evidence from the Barnes Street location as they seek to identify the person who opened fire.
