Carson Hocevar faced intense backlash from fans and fellow drivers after a contentious finish at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. The No. 19 driver employed four brake checks during a late race battle with Austin Cindric, a tactic that ended with Cindric’s No. 2 car taking significant damage. Hocevar’s aggressive driving has made him a recurring target for criticism throughout the 2026 season, but this incident drew particular scrutiny from the racing community.
William Byron won the race, leading 362 laps for his first victory of the year. Chase Elliott finished second, while Kyle Larson placed ninth. Larson’s result positions him to secure the championship at the season finale in Homestead, Florida, next Sunday. The race marked the penultimate event of the season, with one contest remaining before the checkered flag.
Former driver Kenny Wallace expressed shock on social media, stating he had never witnessed anything like Hocevar’s performance. Current driver Corey LaJoie also reacted with disbelief, describing the move as startling. Hocevar’s own spotter, Tyler Green, urged the driver to continue moving forward during the incident, a moment captured on the public audio feed.
Austin Cindric declined a post-race interview with NBC, a decision the column suggests may indicate he is strategizing for the final race. Fans are calling on NASCAR officials to park Hocevar, a term referring to a penalty that removes a driver from competition, though the column notes that with only one race left, the penalty’s practical impact is limited. Rival drivers including Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski, and Zane Smith are expected to contend with Hocevar at Homestead.
NASCAR viewership numbers improved following a dip earlier in the season. The Phoenix race drew 1.2 million viewers, a low point that concerned marketing staff. However, the return of the Cup Series to NBC for the Talladega race boosted ratings to 2.5 million viewers. This figure represents a 1% increase from the previous year, though it remains below the 3.1 million viewers recorded in 2024. NASCAR executives have indicated they are not alarmed by the overall season numbers, citing changes in Nielsen’s reporting methodology.
Austin Dillon accompanied President Donald Trump and Richard Childress to a rally in Daytona, Florida, last Friday. Dillon posted a photo of the trip to Instagram, captioning it with a greeting to Childress, whom he refers to as Pop Pop. The event took place during election week, adding a political dimension to the driver’s public appearances.
The season concludes next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Kyle Larson needs only to finish the race to claim the title, making the final event a formality for him while other drivers compete for position. Natalie Decker attended a horse race over the weekend, appearing in a separate segment of the column.
