North Carolina State University won a state-wide milk drinking competition on Tuesday.
The contest, known as the Milk War, pitted universities across the state against one another. Participating schools included Appalachian State, UNC Asheville, and UNC Chapel Hill. The online account @channel13nc organized the event and tracked the final standings.
NC State students rallied behind the @ncsumilkdrinkers Instagram page. The account encouraged students to gather in dining halls for group drinking sessions. This collective effort set the school apart from competitors who focused on individual consumption.
Brandon Goss, a first-year student in exploratory studies, joined the competition at Fountain Dining Hall. He drank 12 glasses of milk during the event. Goss said he initially expected a small turnout of 10 or 20 people. Instead, he observed at least 75 students participating together.
Reed Rhodes, a first-year engineering major, cited campus pride as a motivator. He noted that NC State produces its own dairy products and has cows on campus. Rhodes stated that students felt an obligation to win because of this agricultural identity.
The competition created social connections among students from different dorms and clubs. Rhodes said the event allowed people who would normally remain strangers to interact. He credited the shared activity with helping him meet new friends.
The winning moment came when the university reached a total of 600 glasses consumed within a two-hour period. Rhodes identified this milestone as the turning point that secured the victory. The online leaderboard tracked these submissions in real time, keeping engagement high among students who watched the counts rise.
