Melat Kiros is the first woman from Generation Z to serve in the United States Congress. She is 29 years old and represents Colorado. Her election follows a July primary win over incumbent Democratic Representative Diana DeGette. Kiros joins Representative Maxwell Frost of Florida, who won a seat in 2022 as the first member of that generation in Congress.

Kiros was born in 1997 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and moved to Denver as an infant. She graduated from Washington College in Maryland in 2018 with a degree in political science and economics. She earned a law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2022. Her professional path shifted after she was fired from a New York City law firm in 2023. The firm dismissed her after she refused to retract an open letter on campus antisemitism. She described the firing as a catalyst that led her to take politics seriously.

Upon returning to Colorado, Kiros joined the campaign of John Padora in 2024 as his communications director. She decided to run for office herself after President Donald Trump won a second term. She believed the Democratic Party had lost touch with its voters. Her campaign focused on generational change, affordability, and opposition to U.S. support for Israel. DeGette criticized Kiros for her lack of experience, arguing it was not the time to gamble with a political newcomer.

Kiros framed her youth as an advantage, stating she is not burdened by past political traditions. She acknowledged the intimidating amount of knowledge required for the role but emphasized her eagerness to learn. During her campaign, she worked as a barista while pursuing a doctoral degree in public policy. She noted that the U.S. election system often requires young and working-class candidates to make substantial financial and personal sacrifices to compete.

John Padora said he was not surprised by Kiros’s rise to national politics. He noted that she tapped into deep frustration among Americans toward a disconnected political establishment. Padora stated that Kiros’s success shows the next generation does not need party establishment permission to pursue public office. Research from the Future Caucus indicates that 117 Generation Z candidates filed to run for Congress in the 2026 midterms. Only 24 of those candidates appeared on November ballots.

Kiros plans to focus on reversing cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Her other policy goals include ending military aid to Israel, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and laying the groundwork for Medicare for All. She also seeks to establish universal childcare and eldercare. She believes voters have signaled a desire for bold issues to address the affordability crisis.

Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are assisting Kiros and other new, young members in their transition to Washington. Kiros appreciates the intentional support from progressive incumbents. They provide practical advice, such as living close to the Capitol to ensure quick access. She noted that without this guidance, new members are often expected to figure out the institution on their own, a process that can be time-consuming.
